Distinguished Alumnus, The Paul Merage School of Business
Chris Insuk Song, this year’s recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award for The Paul Merage School of Business, has fostered a thriving culture of leadership, volunteerism and service to support his alma mater.
After working for Samsung in Korea, Chris came to Southern California to pursue his MBA at UC Irvine. There, relationships with classmates, faculty and advisors at the Merage School Career Center shaped both his professional path and his approach to leadership.
Those experiences ultimately led him to Costco Korea, where he has built a successful career spanning operations, merchandisings and human resources. He now serves as a regional human resources manager.
When Chris returned to Korea after graduation, he wanted future students to experience the same sense of belonging that had shaped his own journey. In 2017, after attending a Merage alumni gathering with only a handful of graduates, he volunteered to build a dedicated alumni network. Starting with a list of just 17 alumni, he personally reconnected alumni through professional and social networks.
Thanks to Chris’ vision, generosity and volunteer leadership, the Korea Merage Alumni Group became the largest UC Irvine Merage alumni network outside the United States. It comprises more than 300 highly engaged MBA, master’s and Ph.D. alumni. The group also maintains close connections with approximately 50 current students.
Chris’ commitment extends well beyond alumni events. He meets personally with prospective students and their families, helping them navigate one of the most important decisions of their lives. He has created a culture of mentorship that helps every new Anteater arrive with confidence and leave with lifelong connections.
