Melissa E. Patterson ’03

An accomplished intellectual property attorney, technology leader, mentor and advocate for the next generation of innovators, Melissa E. Patterson is this year’s recipient of the Donald Bren School of Information & Computer Sciences Distinguished Alumni Award.

Melissa’s UC Irvine story began with a phone call. As a prospective student interested in math, science and computers, she received a call from a female UC Irvine computer science student who congratulated her on her admission, answered her questions and encouraged her to enroll. The conversation lasted about 20 minutes, but its impact would shape Melissa’s life.

At UC Irvine, Melissa studied computer science while immersing herself in campus life. She served as president of Women in Computer Science and as boat captain for UC Irvine Crew, and she participated in the Association for Computing Machinery and the Pre-Law Society. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in computer science in 2003.

Melissa began working as a programmer while still a student, gaining experience that would later prove invaluable as she combined technology with another interest: law. She built a distinguished career as a patent attorney, working at the intersection of intellectual property and emerging technologies, including software, artificial intelligence, machine learning, medical devices, communications and other rapidly evolving fields. Today, she serves as senior lead IP legal counsel at Dexcom.

Throughout her career, Melissa has remained committed to creating opportunities for others. She has mentored students, supported STEM programs, served as a Girl Scout troop leader, participated in youth outreach and stayed deeply engaged with UC Irvine, serving on the UC Irvine Alumni Association Board for two years.

Melissa describes this philosophy as “reaching back” while moving forward. The encouragement she received from another young woman helped her see a future for herself in technology; throughout her career, she has worked to provide that same sense of possibility to others.

“What distinguishes Melissa most is the integration of her professional excellence with her sustained service to the UC Irvine community. She is not only a leader in her field, but also a connector, mentor and advocate for students and fellow alumni.”
