Distinguished Alumnus, School of Physical Sciences
A nationally recognized science and technology policy leader, public servant and lifelong champion of innovation, Jim Kohlenberger is this year’s recipient of the School of Physical Sciences Distinguished Alumni Award.
Jim’s fascination with science began long before he arrived at UC Irvine.
As a high school student, he led his school’s computer and physics clubs, excelled in mathematics and became intrigued by how the universe works, an interest sparked by an Isaac Asimov book on black holes and inspired by his father, a chemist.
Jim describes enrolling at UC Irvine as the best decision he’s ever made. His choice fostered a passion that extended beyond understanding physics to using science, innovation and public policy to improve people’s lives.
As a student, Jim embraced opportunities to serve the campus community, working as a resident advisor, serving as vice president of Associated Students of UC Irvine (ASUCI) and successfully advocating for legislation that helped keep higher education affordable for students like himself.
In recognition of his extraordinary leadership and service, UC Irvine honored him with a Lauds & Laurels Award as an undergraduate – an experience that deepened his lifelong connection to the university.
After graduation, Jim took his passion for science and service to the nation’s capital, where he started and served as president of the UC Irvine Alumni Chapter in Washington, D.C.
Professionally, Jim served in both the Clinton and Obama White Houses, advancing initiatives that expanded broadband access, strengthened national scientific leadership, promoted innovation and enhanced cybersecurity, positioning science and technology as essential tools for addressing challenges in health, climate, education and economic opportunity.
Today, as president of JK Strategies and through his nonprofit leadership, he continues to champion policies that harness innovation for the public good.
Jim credits UC Irvine with transforming his life and opening doors he never imagined possible. Through his leadership, public service and enduring commitment to science and innovation, he exemplifies how curiosity about the universe can fuel a lifelong mission to improve the future of humanity.
