Distinguished Alumna, School of Humanities
A distinguished military judge and lifelong advocate for the humanities, Col. Natalie D. Richardson (Ret.) is this year’s recipient of the School of Humanities Distinguished Alumni Award.
Raised in Orange County, Natalie, a first-generation college student, began her journey as a commuter who found a deep sense of belonging in the German Department, graduating with a B.A. in German and a minor in anthropology.
Encouraged by the university’s Education Abroad Program, Natalie spent a transformative year studying in Germany, discovering a passion for lifelong learning and developing an enduring curiosity about people and cultures.
A career exploration course at UC Irvine introduced her to the possibility of law and the military, and after earning her J.D., she joined the U.S. Air Force Judge Advocate General’s Corps.
Over her 30-year Air Force career, Natalie served as prosecutor, defense council, chief circuit trial judge, senior appellate judge and commander of the Air Force Legal Operations Agency (AFLOA), leading more than 900 legal professionals across 76 locations. Natalie gained a reputation for principled leadership, sound judgment and a commitment to justice.
For her outstanding service, Natalie received three Legion of Merit awards, one of the U.S. Armed Forces’ highest military decorations.
Her first Legion of Merit award was for her work with judicial reorganization from regions to a single Western circuit covering 18 Air Force bases in eight states; the second was for her contributions as commander of AFLOA at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland. She was awarded her third Legion of Merit for her service as an appellate judge on the Air Force Court of Criminal Appeals.
For Natalie, her humanities education gave her the skills that defined her career. She credits her study of German with strengthening her writing, analytical thinking and attention to language, skills that became essential when crafting legal arguments, judicial rulings and appellate opinions.
